Nitrofreeze® Cryogenic Deflashing for Better Molded Parts

Share

Nitrofreeze® cryogenic deflashing is a quick, consistent, and cost-effective way to remove flash from batches of molded rubber and plastic parts. Flash, a type of manufacturing defect, is excess material that forms on the surfaces of parts produced with injection, compression, or transfer molding. Flash detracts from a part’s appearance, but it can also cause problems with sealing surfaces or product assembly.

Hand Deflashing vs. Cryogenic Deflashing

Molders can remove flash by hand, but manual trimming is slow, expensive, and labor-intensive. A worker with a hand tool can deflash only one part at a time, and there’s a risk of removing too much or too little material. Plus, hand deflashing is inconsistent. At a time when good workers are hard to find, molders can also expect to pay more for manual labor.

Nitrofreeze® cryogenic deflashing is a batch process that removes flash from tens or hundreds of parts at the same time. This automated, computer-controlled process isn’t just faster, however. In addition to greater part-to-part consistency, molders can expect better quality than hand trimming offers. Plus, Nitrofreeze® can clean features (such as holes) that can be hard to reach with hand tools.

How Nitrofreeze® Cyrogenic Deflashing Works

When you work with Nitrofreeze®, we’ll create a deflashing process that’s specific to your part and that accounts for its size, material, geometry, and features. After sampling, an operator puts batches of your part inside a basket that’s loaded into a cryogenic deflashing machine. Your parts are then cooled below their glass transition temperature so that the flash becomes brittle and easy to remove.

Next, your parts are impacted with a non-abrasive, cryogenic-grade polycarbonate media as they’re tumbled. The media that we use is available in sizes from 0.015” to 0.060” so that our process can reach inside your part’s specific geometries. Nitrofreeze® cryogenic deflashing won’t change critical part tolerances or surface finish, and there aren’t any abrasive residues to remove afterwards.

Molded Rubber Parts

Nitrofreeze® cryogenic deflashing can remove mold flash from these rubber materials.

·         Butyl ·         Perfluorelastomers (Kalrez®)
·         EPDM ·         SBR
·         Fluorosilicone ·         Polyurethane
·         Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) ·         Silicone
·         Natural Gum Rubber ·         Urethane
