Cryogenic Deflashing & Deburring for PPS Parts

Gate vestige and parting-line flash on molded PPS are slow to remove by hand and easy to over-trim — especially on glass-filled grades and small connector bodies. Nitrofreeze removes them without touching the part.

Can PPS parts be cryogenically deflashed?

Yes — Nitrofreeze cryogenically deflashes and deburrs injection-molded PPS (polyphenylene sulfide) parts at its Worcester, Massachusetts facility, including branded grades such as Ryton® and Fortron®, and highly filled resins containing glass fiber, carbon fiber or PTFE. PPS is one of the engineering thermoplastics Nitrofreeze processes most often.

Will deflashing affect tolerances or surface finish?

No. The Nitrofreeze process does not affect surface finish, geometry, or the material itself — highly filled grades included. Parts are cooled until the flash turns brittle and tumbled with polycarbonate media that breaks it at its thin root, leaving molded surfaces and tight tolerances unchanged. Only the flash comes off.

What about gate vestige, cross-holes and blind holes?

Gate vestige and parting-line flash are what PPS molders send to Nitrofreeze most often, along with flash in cross-holes and blind holes that hand tools cannot reach. The media travels through the part, so internal edges, intersecting bores and threads are deflashed in the same cycle as the outside of the part.

What PPS parts does this work for?

Nitrofreeze deflashes PPS electrical connectors, sensor housings, pump and valve components, gears, bearings, ignition and fuel-system parts and insulating components for automotive, electronics, semiconductor, industrial and medical customers. Both injection-molded parts carrying mold flash and machined PPS parts carrying burrs are processed.

How small — and how large — can parts be?

Nitrofreeze processes parts from 0.025″ with thin walls up to 12″ × 12″ in its cryogenic machines — and there is no upper limit on part size: larger PPS parts route to dry ice deflashing or hand finishing. There is no minimum order quantity; runs are subject to a $125 minimum lot charge.

What’s the turnaround and typical cost?

The first run of a new PPS part is treated as a sample: five-day turnaround, free, as Nitrofreeze’s Pre-Production Engineering Evaluation. Once the customer approves the process, production orders turn around in as little as two days after receipt, with same-day and one-day service available for a small premium. Large volume orders typically require more time to process. Deflashing typically runs 10–20% of the value of the part.

Is Nitrofreeze ITAR registered and ISO certified?

Yes. Nitrofreeze is registered with the U.S. Department of State’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) as a manufacturer/exporter under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), and is certified to ISO 9001:2015 by NQA with a scope that names cryogenic deburring and deflashing.
