Can glass-filled nylon parts be cryogenically deflashed?
Yes — Nitrofreeze cryogenically deflashes and deburrs molded glass-filled nylon parts, including 30% and 33% glass grades in PA6 and PA66, at its Worcester, Massachusetts facility. Filled nylons are among the materials Nitrofreeze processes most often.
Will deflashing affect tolerances or the molded surface?
No. The Nitrofreeze process does not affect surface finish, geometry, or the material itself, and the glass fibres in the part are not disturbed. The flash breaks at its root while the molded surfaces and dimensions stay as they came from the tool.
What about flash in connector cavities and around pins?
Cavity and pin-surround flash is the reason glass-filled nylon connector bodies are so slow to hand-trim — and the reason they get scrapped when a tool slips. The Nitrofreeze process carries media into cavities, cross-holes and internal edges in the same cycle as the outside.
What glass-filled nylon parts does this work for?
Nitrofreeze deflashes glass-filled nylon connectors, housings, brackets, gears, bearing cages, fasteners, clips and structural mouldings for automotive, electrical, appliance and industrial customers.
How small — and how large — can parts be?
Nitrofreeze processes parts from 0.025″ with thin walls up to 12″ × 12″ in its cryogenic machines — and there is no upper limit on part size: larger glass-filled nylon parts route to dry ice deflashing or hand finishing. There is no minimum order quantity; runs are subject to a $125 minimum lot charge.
What’s the turnaround and typical cost?
The first run of a new glass-filled nylon part is treated as a sample: five-day turnaround, free, as Nitrofreeze’s Pre-Production Engineering Evaluation. Once the customer approves the process, production orders turn around in as little as two days after receipt, with same-day and one-day service available for a small premium. Large volume orders typically require more time to process. Deflashing typically runs 10–20% of the value of the part.
