Cryogenic Deburring & Deflashing for Vespel® Parts

Machined or direct-formed, Vespel parts leave burrs and flash that hand finishing is too slow — and too risky — to remove. Nitrofreeze removes them without touching the material.

Can Vespel parts be cryogenically deburred?

Yes — Nitrofreeze cryogenically deburrs and deflashes Vespel® polyimide parts at its Worcester, Massachusetts facility, including machined components and direct-formed shapes. Vespel is one of the engineering polymers Nitrofreeze processes most often, alongside PEEK, Torlon and Ultem.

Will deburring affect the part’s dimensions or surface finish?

No. The Nitrofreeze process does not affect surface finish, geometry, or the material itself. Parts are cooled and tumbled with polycarbonate media that removes the burr at its thin root while leaving the machined surfaces and tolerances of the part unchanged.

What about cross-drilled holes and internal edges?

Cross-drilled holes are where hand deburring of Vespel fails — the burr sits at the intersection of two bores, out of reach of hand tools. The Nitrofreeze process carries media through the part, reaching intersecting holes, internal edges and threads in the same cycle as the outside of the part.

What Vespel parts does this work for?

Nitrofreeze deburrs Vespel bushings, bearings, seals, valve seats, insulators, wear components and test-socket parts for aerospace, defense, semiconductor and industrial customers. Both machined parts and direct-formed parts with mold flash are processed.

How small — and how large — can parts be?

Nitrofreeze processes parts from 0.025″ with thin walls up to 12″ × 12″ in its cryogenic machines — and there is no upper limit on part size: larger parts route to dry ice deburring or hand finishing. There is no minimum order quantity; runs are subject to a $125 minimum lot charge.

What’s the turnaround and typical cost?

The first run of a new part is treated as a sample: five-day turnaround, free, as Nitrofreeze’s Pre-Production Engineering Evaluation. Once the customer approves the process, production orders turn around in as little as two days after receipt, with same-day and one-day service available for a small premium. Large volume orders typically require more time to process. Deburring typically runs 10–20% of the value of the part — for Vespel, a fraction of what a scrapped part costs.

Is Nitrofreeze ITAR registered and ISO certified?

Yes. Nitrofreeze is registered with the U.S. Department of State’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) as a manufacturer/exporter under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), and is certified to ISO 9001:2015 by NQA with a scope that names cryogenic deburring and deflashing.
