Cryogenic Deburring & Deflashing for PTFE Parts
PTFE moves under a blade — it smears, folds and drags instead of cutting cleanly. Freezing the burr first is what makes it break off instead.
Can PTFE parts be cryogenically deburred?
Yes — Nitrofreeze cryogenically deburrs and deflashes machined and molded PTFE parts at its Worcester, Massachusetts facility, including filled grades with glass, carbon or bronze. PTFE is one of the fluoropolymers Nitrofreeze processes routinely, alongside PVDF.
Will deburring affect the sealing surface or tolerances?
No. The Nitrofreeze process does not affect surface finish, geometry, or the material itself. Cold makes the burr brittle enough to break at its root, so the machined faces and tolerances that PTFE sealing components depend on are left untouched.
Why does hand deburring PTFE go wrong?
PTFE is soft and cold-flows, so a blade tends to push the burr over rather than remove it, leaving a folded edge that lifts in service. The Nitrofreeze process removes the burr in one pass without contacting the part with a tool, and repeats identically across a batch.
What PTFE parts does this work for?
Nitrofreeze deburrs PTFE back-up rings, seals, gaskets, valve seats, bushings, insulators and machined fittings for semiconductor, chemical-processing, aerospace, medical and fluid-power customers — both machined components and molded parts with parting-line flash.
How small — and how large — can parts be?
Nitrofreeze processes parts from 0.025″ with thin walls up to 12″ × 12″ in its cryogenic machines — and there is no upper limit on part size: larger PTFE parts route to dry ice deflashing or hand finishing. There is no minimum order quantity; runs are subject to a $125 minimum lot charge.
What’s the turnaround and typical cost?
The first run of a new PTFE part is treated as a sample: five-day turnaround, free, as Nitrofreeze’s Pre-Production Engineering Evaluation. Once the customer approves the process, production orders turn around in as little as two days after receipt, with same-day and one-day service available for a small premium. Large volume orders typically require more time to process. Deburring typically runs 10–20% of the value of the part.
