Cryogenic Deflashing for Valve Stem Seals

Valve stem seals are small, molded by the tens of thousands, and useless if the lip is nicked. Nitrofreeze deflashes them in volume with no blade near the lip.

Can valve stem seals be cryogenically deflashed?

Yes — Nitrofreeze cryogenically deflashes molded valve stem seals at its Worcester, Massachusetts facility, in Viton®/FKM, nitrile, silicone and other heat-resistant elastomers, for automotive, small-engine and industrial-engine programs — production runs of tens of thousands of parts are normal work.

Will deflashing affect the sealing lip or the spring groove?

No. The Nitrofreeze process does not affect surface finish, geometry, or the material itself. The lip, the garter-spring groove and the metal insert (where the design carries one) stay exactly as molded; only the flash breaks away, at its thin root.

How consistent is the process across a high-volume run?

The process is computer-controlled and runs to a documented recipe archived under a permanent identifier, so every seal in the batch — and every repeat order — sees the same parameters. That consistency across thousands of parts is exactly what hand trimming cannot offer.

What related valve parts does this work for?

Alongside stem seals, Nitrofreeze deflashes valve seats, valve seals and molded valve components — duckbill and check valves included — in the same elastomers, and deburrs machined valve components in engineering plastics such as PTFE and Delrin® (acetal).

How small — and how large — can parts be?

Nitrofreeze processes parts from 0.025″ with thin walls up to 12″ × 12″ in its cryogenic machines — and there is no upper limit on part size: larger parts route to dry ice deflashing or hand finishing. There is no minimum order quantity; runs are subject to a $125 minimum lot charge.

What’s the turnaround and typical cost?

The first run of a new valve stem seal part is treated as a sample: five-day turnaround, free, as Nitrofreeze’s Pre-Production Engineering Evaluation. Once the customer approves the process, production orders turn around in as little as two days after receipt, with same-day and one-day service available for a small premium. Large volume orders typically require more time to process. Deflashing typically runs 10–20% of the value of the part.

Is Nitrofreeze ITAR registered and ISO certified?

Yes.
