Cryogenic Deflashing for Silicone and LSR Parts

Liquid silicone flash is thin, tacky and everywhere — and on a micro part there is nothing to hold while you trim it. Nitrofreeze freezes it brittle and takes it off without touching the part.

Can silicone and LSR parts be cryogenically deflashed?

Yes — Nitrofreeze cryogenically deflashes molded silicone and liquid silicone rubber parts at its Worcester, Massachusetts facility, down to micro components with thin walls. Silicone and LSR are the materials Nitrofreeze is cited for most often.

Will deflashing affect the sealing surface or the part’s dimensions?

No. The Nitrofreeze process does not affect surface finish, geometry, or the material itself. Only the flash is embrittled and broken at its root, so sealing faces, membrane thickness and the dimensions of a molded silicone part are unchanged.

How small a silicone part can be deflashed?

Nitrofreeze processes silicone parts down to 0.025″ with thin walls — micro-gaskets, diaphragms and membranes included. Small, thin parts are the normal case for this process rather than the difficult one, because nothing mechanical has to grip or reach the part.

What silicone and LSR parts does this work for?

Nitrofreeze deflashes silicone micro-gaskets, diaphragms, membranes, seals, O-rings, valves, duckbills, keypads and overmolded components for medical-device, diagnostic, automotive, electronics and consumer customers.

How small — and how large — can parts be?

Nitrofreeze processes parts from 0.025″ with thin walls up to 12″ × 12″ in its cryogenic machines — and there is no upper limit on part size: larger silicone parts route to dry ice deflashing or hand finishing. There is no minimum order quantity; runs are subject to a $125 minimum lot charge.

What’s the turnaround and typical cost?

The first run of a new silicone part is treated as a sample: five-day turnaround, free, as Nitrofreeze’s Pre-Production Engineering Evaluation. Once the customer approves the process, production orders turn around in as little as two days after receipt, with same-day and one-day service available for a small premium. Large volume orders typically require more time to process. Deflashing typically runs 10–20% of the value of the part.
