Cryogenic Deburring for Beryllium Copper Parts
Stamped BeCu contacts and springs carry a fine edge burr that has to go without changing the spring geometry. Nitrofreeze removes it in batches, identically.
Can beryllium copper parts be cryogenically deburred?
Yes — Nitrofreeze cryogenically deburrs stamped, machined and formed beryllium copper parts at its Worcester, Massachusetts facility. BeCu is one of the metals Nitrofreeze processes alongside its engineering-plastic and elastomer work.
Will deburring change the spring temper or the geometry?
No. The Nitrofreeze process does not affect surface finish, geometry, or the material itself. Parts are cold only briefly and are not heated, struck or abraded, so form, thickness and temper are unchanged; only the burr at the sheared edge is removed.
Why not tumble or hand-deburr contacts instead?
Conventional tumbling rounds the contact edges and can deform fine spring fingers, and hand deburring cannot be repeated identically across thousands of pieces. The Nitrofreeze process is computer-controlled, so every part in the batch sees the same cycle.
What beryllium copper parts does this work for?
Nitrofreeze deburrs BeCu electrical contacts, spring fingers, connector pins, shielding fingers, bushings, bearings and small stampings for electronics, semiconductor-test, aerospace, defense and telecommunications customers.
How small — and how large — can parts be?
Nitrofreeze processes parts from 0.025″ with thin walls up to 12″ × 12″ in its cryogenic machines — and there is no upper limit on part size: larger beryllium copper parts route to dry ice deflashing or hand finishing. There is no minimum order quantity; runs are subject to a $125 minimum lot charge.
What’s the turnaround and typical cost?
The first run of a new beryllium copper part is treated as a sample: five-day turnaround, free, as Nitrofreeze’s Pre-Production Engineering Evaluation. Once the customer approves the process, production orders turn around in as little as two days after receipt, with same-day and one-day service available for a small premium. Large volume orders typically require more time to process. Deburring typically runs 10–20% of the value of the part.
