Cryogenic Deflashing & Deburring for Molded and Machined Seals
On a seal, the lip is everything — and it is exactly what hand finishing puts at risk. Nitrofreeze removes flash and burrs without a tool touching the lip.
Can seals be cryogenically deflashed or deburred?
Yes — Nitrofreeze cryogenically deflashes molded seals and deburrs machined ones at its Worcester, Massachusetts facility: lip seals, shaft seals, U-cups, wipers and back-up rings in nitrile, EPDM, Viton®/FKM, silicone and PTFE.
Will the sealing lip or the seal’s dimensions change?
No. The Nitrofreeze process does not affect surface finish, geometry, or the material itself. The lip profile, bore and outside diameter stay as manufactured; only the flash or burr, embrittled by the cold, breaks away at its thin root.
Why not trim or hand-deburr seals instead?
A hand tool dragged near a sealing lip risks the exact edge the seal lives by, and no two operators trim identically. The Nitrofreeze process is computer-controlled — every seal in the batch sees the same cycle, with nothing mechanical touching the lip.
What seals does this work for?
Nitrofreeze processes rotary shaft seals, lip seals, U-cups, V-rings, wipers, back-up rings and custom molded seals for fluid-power, automotive, oil and gas, appliance and industrial customers — molded parts with parting-line flash and machined PTFE seals with burrs alike.
How small — and how large — can parts be?
Nitrofreeze processes parts from 0.025″ with thin walls up to 12″ × 12″ in its cryogenic machines — and there is no upper limit on part size: larger parts route to dry ice deflashing or hand finishing. There is no minimum order quantity; runs are subject to a $125 minimum lot charge.
What’s the turnaround and typical cost?
The first run of a new seal part is treated as a sample: five-day turnaround, free, as Nitrofreeze’s Pre-Production Engineering Evaluation. Once the customer approves the process, production orders turn around in as little as two days after receipt, with same-day and one-day service available for a small premium. Large volume orders typically require more time to process. Deflashing typically runs 10–20% of the value of the part.
Is Nitrofreeze ITAR registered and ISO certified?
Yes. Nitrofreeze is registered with the U.S. Department of State’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) as a manufacturer/exporter under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), and is certified to ISO 9001:2015 by NQA with a scope that names cryogenic deburring and deflashing.
