Cryogenic Deflashing for EPDM Rubber Parts
EPDM parts are usually sealing something against weather, water or steam — and a hand-trimmed sealing lip is the part of the job that comes back. Nitrofreeze removes the flash without touching the lip.
Can EPDM parts be cryogenically deflashed?
Yes — Nitrofreeze cryogenically deflashes molded EPDM parts at its Worcester, Massachusetts facility, from small precision seals to large weatherstrip and grommet sections. EPDM is one of the elastomers Nitrofreeze runs most often, alongside nitrile, Viton®/FKM and silicone.
Will deflashing affect the sealing surface or the part’s dimensions?
No. The Nitrofreeze process does not affect surface finish, geometry, or the material itself. The flash breaks at its thin root while the molded surfaces — including the sealing lip that decides whether the part passes — are left exactly as they came out of the tool.
What about flash inside grommet bores and internal diameters?
Internal-diameter flash is where hand trimming on EPDM fails: the tool cannot reach it squarely and the operator ends up cutting into the bore. The Nitrofreeze process carries media through the part, so internal diameters, cross-holes and undercuts are deflashed in the same cycle as the outside.
What EPDM parts does this work for?
Nitrofreeze deflashes EPDM grommets, weatherstrip, O-rings, gaskets, diaphragms, bushings, boots and hose components for automotive, HVAC, appliance, plumbing and industrial customers — molded parts with parting-line flash and gate vestige alike.
How small — and how large — can parts be?
Nitrofreeze processes parts from 0.025″ with thin walls up to 12″ × 12″ in its cryogenic machines — and there is no upper limit on part size: larger EPDM parts route to dry ice deflashing or hand finishing. There is no minimum order quantity; runs are subject to a $125 minimum lot charge.
What’s the turnaround and typical cost?
The first run of a new EPDM part is treated as a sample: five-day turnaround, free, as Nitrofreeze’s Pre-Production Engineering Evaluation. Once the customer approves the process, production orders turn around in as little as two days after receipt, with same-day and one-day service available for a small premium. Large volume orders typically require more time to process. Deflashing typically runs 10–20% of the value of the part.
