Cryogenic Deflashing for Molded Grommets
Grommet flash hides in the bore and the groove — the two places a trimming blade reaches worst. Nitrofreeze deflashes both in the same cycle as the outside.
Can molded grommets be cryogenically deflashed?
Yes — Nitrofreeze cryogenically deflashes molded grommets at its Worcester, Massachusetts facility, in EPDM, nitrile, silicone and other elastomers, from small wire-harness grommets to large panel grommets. Bore flash, groove flash and parting-line flash come off in one cycle.
Will deflashing affect the groove or the sealing surfaces?
No. The Nitrofreeze process does not affect surface finish, geometry, or the material itself. The mounting groove, bore and sealing surfaces stay exactly as molded — only the flash, brittle at temperature, breaks away at its root.
What about flash inside the bore?
Bore flash is where hand trimming on grommets fails: the tool cannot reach it squarely and ends up cutting into the bore. The Nitrofreeze process carries media through the part, so bores, cross-holes and undercuts are deflashed along with the outside.
What grommets does this work for?
Nitrofreeze deflashes wire-harness, panel, firewall, cable-sealing and vibration-isolation grommets for automotive, electrical, appliance, HVAC and industrial customers — open, blind and membrane (pierce-through) designs, in prototype runs and production volumes.
How small — and how large — can parts be?
Nitrofreeze processes parts from 0.025″ with thin walls up to 12″ × 12″ in its cryogenic machines — and there is no upper limit on part size: larger parts route to dry ice deflashing or hand finishing. There is no minimum order quantity; runs are subject to a $125 minimum lot charge.
What’s the turnaround and typical cost?
The first run of a new grommet part is treated as a sample: five-day turnaround, free, as Nitrofreeze’s Pre-Production Engineering Evaluation. Once the customer approves the process, production orders turn around in as little as two days after receipt, with same-day and one-day service available for a small premium. Large volume orders typically require more time to process. Deflashing typically runs 10–20% of the value of the part.
