Nitrofreeze® Cryogenic Solutions is ITAR registered and NIST 800-171 certified. If your company is part of the defense supply chain, or if you work in related industries such as aerospace, you may be required to use vendors with these designations. When you work with Nitrofreeze®, you can be confident we’ll safeguard your project information while offering the cryogenic services you need. Examples include:

  • Cryogenic deburring for efficiently removing burrs from machined plastic and metal parts.
  • Cryogenic deflashing for safely removing mold flash from plastic and rubber parts.
  • Dry ice blasting for deflashing or deburring larger, high-value, or especially intricate parts.
  • Cryogenic treatment for improved durability, wear resistance, and stress relief in metal parts.
  • Thermal cycling for dynamically pre-conditioning and relieving residual stresses.
  • Shrink fitting for temporarily changing the dimensions of parts so that they fit and stay together.

Keep reading to learn about the benefits of choosing an ITAR-registered and NIST 800-171 certified vendor when you need cryogenic services.

ITAR Registered Cryogenic Services

Nitrofreeze® has been an ITAR-registered company for over a decade. To the best of our knowledge, we are the only cryogenic service provider with an ITAR registration. ITAR stands for International Traffic in Arms Regulations and controls the manufacture, sale, and distribution of defense and space-related articles and services as defined in the United States Munitions List (USML).

The purpose of ITAR is to keep defense technology and technical data within the hands of U.S. persons – and away from America’s enemies. The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Political-Military Affairs division approved Nitrofreeze’s ITAR application, and the U.S. Department of State’s Director of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) has authorized us to work with all branches of the U.S. military.

Companies that fail to comply with ITAR requirements can face stiff penalties. For example, when a major manufacturer of thermal imaging systems disclosed USML data to dual national employees, the U.S. State Department levied $30 million in fines. By choosing an ITAR-registered provider of cryogenic services, you can reduce the risk of a violation and the damage it could cause to your company’s reputation.

NIST 800-171 Certified Cryogenic Services

Nitrofreeze® is also NIST 800-171 certified for cybersecurity, a growing concern for companies in the defense supply chain and beyond. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) develops information security standards, and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) recognizes NIST 800-171 by requiring suppliers at all levels to comply with its provisions.

Specifically, the DoD’s Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) contains a clause about covered defense information (CDI), which includes both unclassified controlled technical information (CTI) and controlled unclassified (CUI) information. If you’re working under a contract that contains a DFARS 252.204-7012 clause, you’re responsible for safeguarding any CDI, CTI, and CUI that you have.

As part of your responsibility, you may need to work with NIST 800-171 certified vendors so that you can share information such as part schematics. Companies that do business with the U.S. federal government have been required to meet NIST 800-171 requirements since 2017, and failing to comply with a DFARS clause can result in the loss of current and future contracts.
